Sandra Scott
I was convicted in the state of Wisconsin of First Degree Reckless Homicide case #07CF50 and I was sentenced to 25 years of initial confinement and 10 years of extended supervision. I admitted to punching a 2 year old in the stomach, she died a couple of hours later and it was determined that she died of blunt force trauma to the stomach and she had internal bleeding from which she ultimately died from.
The prosecution contends that I acted recklessly and with utter disregard for her life by the act in, and of itself, and also that I prolonged medical attention which could have saved her life. I disagree, and was not aware at any time until I brought her to the

hospital that she was in dire need of medical attention, and at that point I immediately took her to the hospital and called 911.
I didn't immediately confess but approximately 5 days after her death I informed the police that I delivered two punches to her stomach. It was only because of the shame that I didn't tell them sooner and I didn't want to subject my family to any unnecessary media coverage and humiliation that they were already being exposed to.
A Second Degree Reckless Homicide charge was read in and the jury had the option of choosing the lesser included offense and they did not. I feel that I should have been convicted of Second Degree at the most because I did not have the knowledge that punching her in the stomach would lead to her death. I have admitted to my actions and have taken the consequences. I am truly sorry for the tragic turn of events that cost the young child her life but I don't agree that I showed utter disregard for her life. I felt that I did everything that I could to save her when I realized that something was wrong with her.
